Securing Success: Cultivating Responsible Employee Behavior Amid Rising Security Breaches

 As security breaches continue to increase, employee consequences for not adhering to security policy guidelines increases because of the cost associated with organizational liability for employee behavior. Employee consequences should reflect the potential impact an employee’s behavior can have on society and the organization. 


As employees gain experience, they often gain access to more sensitive data. The liable organization is responsible for supervising and guiding employees to determine which employees are equipped to perform which tasks. Despite the common opinion that quickly drops the guillotine, when managing a large corporation that collects data, innocent data breaches frequently occur. A careless employee should be given employee training to learn how to properly handle and protect sensitive data. They should be given reliable tools for data collection and should be carefully walked through company processes. 


A company’s consequences should be formed within a positive company culture that treats employees like people, not machines that always deliver a perfect response every single time.  Malicious employees are often created in companies that underpay and mistreat them. A company's attitude, values, and culture can be quickly assessed through the quality of its employee training. Companies often suffer data breaches due to poor employee training because they do not want the associated expense nor do they want to invest the time in training their employees. 


Companies can decrease the likelihood of a data breach by establishing a strong initial onboarding and training program that presents written policies, procedures, and guidelines. Employees should receive ongoing training and feedback from supervisors to encourage them in positive directions and provide support when struggling with company processes. Regular audits and assessments allow a corporation to train supervisors to successfully encourage positive employee behavior, guide struggling employees toward success, and identify malicious employees or employees that develop a history of negligence.
